"Spiral Heart Shell" by Chris Reilly
By Robert L. Pincus
ART CRITIC
July 5, 2007
The magnetic light in Chris Reilly's paintings is hard to define. It's not exactly naturalistic, but it isn't completely otherworldly, either. It's as if the sun were shining from behind a kind of mist, backlighting vegetation, insect life, mountains and everything else.
“Spiral Heart Shell” is the third local solo exhibition at Scott White Contemporary Art for Reilly, who lives in Point Loma. He's one of those artists whose newest paintings build gracefully on past work and then transcend any expectations they create. If you have even the slightest interest in painting, historical or contemporary, you will want to see this show.
Reilly's images, while they contain beautifully rendered flowers and mountains, are more like shimmering visions: nature reimagined as a dreamlike version of itself. Flowers, leaves and landscape take on a lush textured quality. Encaustics, color mixed with heated wax, is his favored medium, difficult to master but sensuous and luminescent when beautifully executed – as it is in Reilly's art.
